Taylor (Fred) is born in Boston.
June 8, 1929
The son of Frank and Ann (Feinstone) Taylor, Fred Taylor grows up in Roxbury and Newton, graduates from Boston University, and works initially in the family mattress business. A jazz fan, his tape recording of a Storyville performance results in an album by Dave Brubeck that launches Taylor’s career as a promoter, nightclub owner, friend, and mentor to local and visiting musicians. He opens two adjacent clubs on Boylston Street in 1965,* and comes to be called “Boston’s Mr. Jazz.” A longtime resident of Kenmore Square, Taylor subsequently moves to Watertown. He dies on October 26, 2019.
